Mackenzie was closing Olivia’s bedroom door when she saw Nick coming up the stairs with a worried look on his face. She put her finger to her lips and pointed back down the stairs. If Olivia heard her father she would be up and out of bed in seconds. It had taken Mackenzie two stories and arm tickles to get her to go to sleep. If Nick woke her, he would be doing the honors of reading about Tidy Teddy Bear. Mackenzie had had her fill. Nick nodded, turned around, and took the stairs two at a time. Mackenzie followed at a slower pace. Something was wrong, but she wasn’t in any hurry to find out what. She found Nick in the den pouring from the brandy decanter.

“You might want to let me fix one of these for you.” Since neither of them were hardcore drinkers, Nick’s going straight for the alcohol alerted Mackenzie to a serious problem. Not that she needed the glass in his hand to clue her in. Nick had gone from being her roommate to her best friend, husband, and finally, to being the father of her child. She could read him as easily as she read Olivia.

“What happened?”

“My parents. What else would drive me to drink?”

Mackenzie sat on the couch, took the glass Nick offered, and set it on the end table close enough to grab at a moment’s notice.

“All right, tell me what they’ve done.”

“I thought they were taking things so well. I just assumed that if they knew I was fine with it that they would leave well enough alone.” Nick pushed back the lock of hair at his forehead, took a sip from his drink, and sighed. “I was having brunch at the Roheibeth Hotel with Seven…”

Mackenzie’s tension eased. Now she understood Nick’s apprehension. She had been uncomfortable seeing her mother after a night with Colby too. “Who’s Seven?”

“His name is Mark. Seven is his number on our soccer team. He also looks just like Brad Pitt. He, uh, we’ve been seeing each other for a few weeks now.”

“Is it serious?” Mackenzie raised her eyebrow. She and Nick had agreed that if either of them dated someone serious enough to bring around Olivia, they would introduce them to the other parent.

Nick shook his head, but he did blush, which meant that he thought things might go that way or he at least hoped they would. “We like each other a lot. I don’t think he’s any more into the game playing than I am. He knows all about my parents not knowing about me and he’s cool with it, but that’s not what I wanted to tell you. My father was there eating lunch with a woman.”

“Do you think your father suspected anything, Nick? Were you two—”

“You don’t understand. That’s about the least of my worries. It’s the woman he was with. When I came over to say hello, my father looked like he had been caught with his zipper down.”
